An environmental impact assessment is used to ensure that projects do not cause adverse environmental effects and to promote sustainable development. The resposibilities and procedures of the assessment are set out my the Canadian Evironmental Assessment Act. 

Impact assessments can be used when land is being developed, when an incident occurs such as a spill, or when symptoms of exposure are observed.
